Purpose of Establishment

The Gaya National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage is a research organization subsidiary to the Cultural Heritage Administration of the Republic of Korea. It was founded on January 3, 1990 to conserve the Gaya cultural heritage scattered throughout Gyeongsangnam-do, Busan, and Ulsan. The mission of our institute is to promote the balanced development of the local cultural heritage and, in particular, to illuminate the true history and culture of Gaya, which has been under-researched due to a lack of documented records.

Since its foundation under the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage in 1990, our institute has been in charge of the excavation and research of cultural properties in Gyeongsangnam-do and the metro cities of Busan and Ulsan; the conservation and maintenance of discovered artifacts and ruins; and the publication of excavation and research results. Since 2007, when the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage was designated as an independent research organization, our institute has been making efforts to conserve the cultural heritage of Gaya and to promote the balanced development of the local cultural heritage.
