The Main Research Hub for the Cultural Heritages in Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi Province
The Seoul National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage was established in February 2017 to conduct research on cultural heritage in the capital region and create value in the conversation and use of cultural heritage. Pungnaptoseong Earthen Fortification is being excavated to investigate the cultural and historical identity of Baekje Kingdom during the Hanseong period. Gyeongbokgung Palace, the center of the capital Hanyang, is also being academically researched to understand the capital area during the Joseon period. Moreover, academic research is in progress to highlight the merits of local cultural heritage around Seoul, such as the walled town and royal tombs of the Goryeo Dynasty and maritime borderland sites of the late Joseon period, and to share these cultural assets with the public at large.
Academic Research on Hanyang (Seoul), the Capital of the Joseon Dynasty
Based on the four palaces of the Joseon Dynasty, the Seoul National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage has been conducting its "Academic Research on the Hanyang Ancient Capital" project to spotlight the historical value of Hanyang (Seoul), the capital of the Joseon Dynasty. Building upon this research, the Seoul NRICH will strive to investigate the history of Gyeongbokgung Palace, the main palace of the Joseon Dynasty, and further reveal the significance of Hanyang with a focus on the four palaces.
Academic Research on Cultural Heritage in the Capital Area from Goryeo Dynasty
To better understand the role of Ganghwasanseong Fortress during the Mongol Invasions of Korea and to identify the cultural aspects of Gyeonggi-do Province by region, the Seoul NRICH actively engages in field surveys of major historical sites near Ganghwasanseong Fortress and in the Gyeonggi-do region. It subsequently performs academic research and excavations on these sites. Moreover, through digital archiving of the academic research materials from the Goryeo era, it aims to energize studies of the period and contribute to the promotion of local cultural heritage.
Academic Research on Pungnaptoseong Earthen Fortification
Academic Research on Pungnaptoseong has been ongoing since 1997 with the goal of forging the identity of the earthen fortress as the royal capital of the Hanseong-era Baekje Kingdom and to establish maintenance and restoration policies. The Seoul NRICH will continue to support the recognition of the significance of Pungnaptoseong by restoring the lost sections of the west and east walls and by investigating key facilities, such as the royal palace.
Policy Support for Conservation and Maintenance of Cultural Heritage in the Capital Area
The Seoul National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage is promoting policies for the systematic maintenance and conservation of cultural heritage in the metropolitan area. To assess the value of buried cultural properties and incorporate those properties into a stable conservation and management system, the institute supervises the preservation of state-owned cultural heritage, conducts appraisal of buried cultural properties, and monitors historical sites on which preservation measures are imposed and excavation sites.
