The Architectural Heritage Research Division conducts a wide range of surveys and research on architectural heritage both domestically and internationally. Through research on traditional construction techniques of architectural heritage, we accumulate and improve repair techniques for the preservation of architectural heritage. Additionally, we explore various ways to preserve and utilize architectural remains through restoration and rehabilitation research on important architectural sites. These diverse research achievements contribute to enhancing the value, preserving the original form, and improving the usability of architectural heritage.
Study on Traditional Architectural Technology
This research focuses on developing proper repair techniques to preserve the original form of traditional architecture by investigating traditional construction methods and changes over time in architectural heritage. To achieve this, we have established clear criteria for documenting the original form based on field surveys and conducted research on traditional construction techniques. Through this research, we have developed guidelines for surveying and dismantling architectural heritage. Recently, we have expanded our research scope to include modern architectural heritage, aiming to develop techniques, methods, structures, and materials for the systematic preservation and management of these heritage sites. Our construction technology research is based on our previous experiences with the dismantling and repair of the three-story stone pagodas at Gamunsa Temple and Bulguksa Temple in Gyeongju, the three-story stone pagoda at Mireuksaji Temple in Iksan, and the Four Lions Stone Pagoda at Hwaeomsa Temple in Gurye. Through field-based research, we will continue to devote ourselves to research that can contribute to the preservation of architectural heritage sites.
Comparative Study of Ancient East Asian Art
The division actively engages in onsite field studies of traditional architectural monuments and examples of their preservation and restoration in Asian countries such as China, Japan, and Thailand with the aim to better define the characteristics of Korean architecture and compile information on the restoration of ancient buildings. In addition, the division conducts joint in-depth studies of traditional Asian architecture with overseas research institutes such as the Fine Arts Department of the Thai Ministry of Culture.
Research on Restoration and Repair Techniques
This research focuses on applying data on the styles and construction methods of traditional architecture to providing a stylistic background and encourage dedicated plans for the repair and restoration of ancient structures to their original condition. Examples include the creation of restoration plans for Seyeonjeong Pavilion and the Stone Pagoda at Mireuksa Temple using 3D scanning technology. Expertise obtained through this research is also being applied to devising master restoration plans for ancient Buddhist temples such as Gameunsa and Hwangnyongsa.
Repair and Maintenance of Important Architectural Heritage
Repair and maintenance of important cultural heritage are being performed based on research conducted by the division. Conservation and repair projects have been completed on the East and West Three-Story Stone Pagodas at Gameunsa Temple, Dabotap Pagoda at Bulguksa Temple, and Three-Story Stone Pagoda at Bulguksa Temple. A project is currently underway on the Four Lion Three-Story Stone Pagoda at Hwaeomsa Temple in Gurye.
