The Central Research Hub for the Cultural Heritage of South Jedla & Jeju Region
The Naju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage was founded on August 16, 2005 to pursue systematic academic surveys and the conservation of cultural heritage in Gwangju Metropolitan City, Jeollanam-do Province, and Jeju-do Island. It has emphasized identifying the characteristics of ancient cultures in these regions through academic research and surveys designed to better illuminate the nature of the Mahan ancient political confederacy that existed in this region. The ancient cultures in these regions are marked by dolmens in Hwasun and Gochang, which have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage, and tombs with large-scale earthenware jar coffins along the Yeongsangang River.
Research on the Recreation of Living Conditions during Ancient Times in the Jeollanam-do Province Region
The institute has attempted the restoration of ancient earthenware technology by studying the production techniques used for large-scale earthenware jar coffins, the illustrative cultural heritage developed along the Yeongsangang River, and the structure of their kilns. It has also excavated major archaeological sites related to ancient life, including the Bogam-ri site and the large-scale earthenware jar coffin kiln site in Oryang-dong in Naju (the only kiln site of the type in the country). Moreover, the institute carries out multidisciplinary research for the restoration of ancient environments along the Yeongsangang River by collaborating with experts in diverse fields, such as archaeology, bibliography, geography, zoology, and botany.
Research on the Local Characteristics of Ancient Tombs in the Jeollanam-do Province Region
As part of its academic research on identifying the local characteristics of ancient tomb culture in the Jeollanam-do Province region, the Naju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage is conducting studies on major Three Kingdoms-era tombs in the region, including the Jeongchon Ancient Tomb in Bokam-ri in Naju, the Ancient Tombs in Songje-ri in Naju, and the Pyosan Ancient Tombs in Masan-ri in Hampyeong. It is performing basic surveys and archiving data and materials related to dolmens and ancient tombs. It has been accumulating high-quality research data by promoting in-depth interdisciplinary research such as scientific analysis of excavated items and restoration research on production techniques.
Research for the Recreation of Techniques Used in the Production of Relics Excavated in the Jeollanam-do Province Region
Through scientific investigation and comparative archaeological research on relics excavated from ancient ruins in the Jeollanam-do Province region, the NRICH is conducting in-depth research to identify related production techniques and accumulate basic data.
Research on the Utilization of Cultural Heritage in the Jeollanam-do Province Region
The NRICH provides content that allows the public to experience and enjoy the academic research achievements on cultural heritage in the Jeollanam-do Province region in a simplified manner. The NRICH has developed a range of hands-on activities, including making your own version of a helmet excavated from the Yamak Ancient Tomb in Goheung, making a miniature version of an earthenware jar coffin (onggwan), and making copies of the gilt-bronze shoes and lamp uncovered from the Jeongchon Ancient Tomb in Naju. The NRICH is providing services to local residents by planning and developing diverse experiential programs.
