A Pivotal Research Institute in the Jungwon Region Including North Chungcheong and Gangwon Provinces

The Jungwon National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage actively engages in systematic surveys and in-depth research on cultural heritage scattered around Chungcheongbuk-do and Gangwon-do Provinces. Through these activities, it aims to reveal the nature and historical characteristics of the regional culture, thereby contributing to its transmission and future development. In addition, it is providing services designed to preserve local cultural properties and enhance their utilization value as part of its effort to firmly establish itself as a national research institute that serves the public interest.

Research on Restoration of Iron making Technology in Jungwon Cultural Area

The former Jungwon area, which is located around Chungju, is one of the three largest iron producing regions in Korea. In order to revive the age-old iron production techniques of the region, the institute has been promoting cross-disciplinary research in archaeology, natural science, and experimental archaeology. Based on natural scientific analysis of the archaeological findings and the data accumulated from excavations and surveys of iron producing sites, experiments are being conducted to recreate ancient Korean iron-making techniques.

Research on Restoration of city structure in Jungwon Cultural Area

In efforts to Restoration the city structure and traffic routes of Jungwon Cultural Area, surveys and intensive studies have been performed on mountain fortress, temples or manufacturing sites and artifacts such as tiles and pottery. Through the compilation and analysis of various archaeological materials from the Jungwon area, the institute has actively developed a vast archive of studies on the region’s culture and is earnestly working to use and share research findings in an attempt to establish the area’s identity.
