발굴당시 조사원들 참여하는 천마총 50년 좌담회(4.6.) / ‘KBS 역사저널 그날’ 방송(4.9.) 문화재청 국립문화재연구원 국립경주문화재연구소(소장 황인호)는 4월 6일 오후 2시 경주 힐튼호텔(경상북도 경주시)에서 경주 천마총 발굴조사 50주년을 맞아 1973년 천마총 발굴조사를 주관했던 문화재관리국(現 문화재청) 미추왕릉지구 발굴조사단의 김동현 부단장을 비롯한 당시 조사원들이 다시 한자리에 모이는 ‘천마총, 그날의 이야기’ 특별 좌담회를 개최한다. 일제강점기에 붙여진 155호분이라는 이름으로 불리던 천마총은 1971년에 수립된 ‘경주관광종합개발계획’에 따라 1973년 4월부터 발굴되었다. 그 결과 천마도가 그려진 자작나무껍질의 말다래(障泥), 금관 등 당대의 문화상을 엿볼 수 있는 1만여 점의 무덤 부장유물이 출토되었고, 5세기를 전후한 신라 돌무지덧널무덤의 축조 방법과 시신을 안치하는 덧널 등의 구조가 새롭게 밝혀지는 등 전례 없는 큰 성과를 거두었다. * 돌무지덧널무덤: 4～6세기 신라의 전형적인 무덤으로 시신과 부장품을 안치하는 나무 덧널 위에 돌무지를 쌓고 흙을 덮어 봉분을 마무리하는 무덤 구조 * 말다래(障泥): 말을 타고 달릴 때 흙이 튀지 않도록 안장 양쪽에 달아 늘어뜨린 네모꼴의 흙 튀김 방지 장치 말다래의 천마도를 근거로 155호분은 새롭게 천마총이라는 이름을 얻었으며, 천마총 발굴은 해방 이후 최초로 국가적인 문화유산 보존·관리 및 활용 정책 아래 이루어 낸 체계적인 학술발굴조사였다는 평가를 받고 있다. 이번 좌담회는 당시 천마총 발굴에 참여하였던, 이제는 일흔을 훌쩍 넘어선 원로들의 생생한 기억을 바탕으로 그들의 노고와 열정, 전례가 없던 대형 고분 발굴에 대한 부담과 고민, 발굴 현장의 일화 등 50년 전 그때를 되돌아보는 자리이다. 좌담회는 총 2부에 걸친 대담과 질의응답 시간으로 진행된다. 1부 ‘천마총, 발굴조사를 되돌아보다’ 와 2부 ‘천마총, 발굴조사 나아가다’ 로 나눠서 진행되며, ▲ 조사단의 구성과 역할, 생활 ▲ 조사 경과와 출토 유물에 대한 상황 ▲ 발굴보고서의 기획과 발간 ▲ 당시 대통령의 방문 ▲ 조사에 대한 언론의 취재 경쟁 ▲ 천마총 발굴조사의 의미 등으로 구성하여 조사단의 일원이었던 6인의 원로들이 당시의 기억을 되새겨보고, 앞으로의 신라고분 연구 방향을 모색하며 자유롭게 이야기를 나누는 대담형식이다. 또한, 과거의 기억에 그치지 않고 이를 바탕으로 앞으로의 신라 고분 연구의 방향에 대해서도 청중과 함께 고민하는 질의응답 시간도 마련하였다. 행사 당일 현장에서 등록 절차만 거치면 누구나 참석할 수 있으며, 좌담회의 모든 내용은 국립경주문화재연구소 유튜브(https://youtube.com/live/ WT5yTZ_f9t4?feature=share)에서 실시간으로 볼 수 있다. 자세한 내용은 국립경주문화재연구소(☎054-622-1720)로 문의하면 된다. 한편, 4월 9일 일요일 오후 9시 40분부터 1시간 동안, 역사 교양 프로그램인 ‘KBS 역사저널 그날’에서는 천마총 발굴 50년을 기념하는 특집 기획방송이 방영된다. 다양한 분야의 출연진이 천마총 발굴의 시대적 배경과 주요 조사 성과 및 의미에 대해 이야기하고, 발굴에 참여했던 윤근일 전 국립경주문화재연구소장이 특별 출연하여 당시 발굴의 뒷이야기를 생생하게 들려줄 예정이다. 문화재청 국립문화재연구원 국립경주문화재연구소는 이번 좌담회와 기획방송을 통해 이제는 우리 국민의 문화유산이 된 천마총의 지난 50년을 되돌아보고, 앞으로 우리 문화유산의 보존․관리 및 활용을 위해 바람직하고 체계적인 학술조사연구의 방향을 가늠해보게 될 것으로 기대한다. The Gyeongju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage (GNRICH; Hwang Inho, Director General) of the Cultural Heritage Administration will hold a special symposium Cheonmachong, the Story of that Day, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Excavation of the Cheonmachong Tomb on April 6, at 2:00 pm at the Hilton Gyeongju. The excavation of the Cheonmachong Tomb is the first academic investigation systematically carried out under the national policies on the protection, management, and use of cultural heritage after the liberation. This year marks the 50th after the excavation of the Cheonmachong Tomb. To celebrate and commemorate, the crew members will reunite after 50 long years, including Kim Donghyeon, Vice Director of GyeongjuMichu Royal Tomb Area Excavation Research Group, the excavation supervisor. We wish to provide an opportunity to travel back to those days 50 years ago through the vivid memories of the veterans who are well in their 70s now, about their hard work and passion, the burdens of and concerns about the largest tomb seen up to that point, and other episodes from the excavation site. The Cheonmachong Tomb used to be known under the name Ancient Tomb No. 155, which was given during the Japanese Occupation. Tomb No. 155 was unearthed as part of the Comprehensive Development of Gyeongju Tourism, established in 1971. As a result, amazing discoveries were made, such as around 10,000 pieces of artifacts, including a pair of birch bark saddle flaps and a gold crown. At the same time, an unprecedented form of grave construction and outer coffin structures were determined. The typical structure of an outer coffin tomb with stone mounds from around the 5th century was recovered along with glamourous grave goods that represent the cultural aspects of that time. Furthermore, Tomb No. 115 was renamed Cheonmachong after the Cheonmado on the saddle flaps. * Outer coffin tomb with stone mounds: Typical burial structure of the 4 - 6th century. Stone mounds are covered upon the wooden outer coffin with the body and burial goods finished with earthen heaps. * Saddle flaps: Square-shaped garments hung on the sides of a horse to prevent dirt splashes. A deliberative section for future research directions of Silla tombs will also be provided so this memory does not just stay in the past. At the same time, Yun Geunil, the former Director General of the Gyeongju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage, will make a special appearance to elaborate on the stories behind the scene.
