The research examines previous studies of materials and techniques for conservation treatments, and establishes a standard of selecting and applying them for an efficient decision-making and treatment. The first research outcome for metal was published in 2009 and will be followed by subsequent publications for various materials.

The research is a part of a long-term project of NRICH, 'Research of developing conservation techniques for cultural heritage', which was commenced in 2009. Its aim is to understand a mechanism of accumulation of dirt and to develop efficient cleaning techniques. The first phase of the research, which focused on ceramic objects, was completed by finding a mechanism of deterioration and developing cleaning technique. In 2010 the research will be continued by taking metal objects aiming at providing the most advanced technique of removing dirt.
