The Research Division of Intangible Cultural Heritage is responsible for surveys and studies of intangible and folk cultural properties. Intangible cultural properties refer to drama, music, dance, handicrafts, and other skills of outstanding historical, artistic and academic value. Folk cultural properties comprise a wide range of folk customs and objects related to the life of the general populace, such as food, housing, clothing, rites of passage, seasonal customs, games, faiths, and industrial skills. These intangible folk legacies are documented and researched based on thorough field surveys.
